About Us
I have always been interested in what I am actually buying when I am out shopping, the ethics behind the companies and manufacturers, the food miles of foods and goods, who tests on animals for cosmetics, toiletries and cleaning products, what policies farms follow for the welfare of their animals, who picks the bananas we eat, who sews the clothes we wear and so on, but never really knew where to start looking. It seemed like an endless task to try to find anything out - even something as simple as which county (or even country) that an apple came from.
Then when I had my first daughter Jessica in 2003, it all became a lot more important to me. After constantly hearing stories of cancer causing additives, harmful pesticides, antibiotics in meat, irradiation, ADHD to name but a few, I became a lot more interested in the whole subject and started researching products and companies in-depth. The results were horrifying. I became aware that the coffee we had been buying for years was the subject of a boycott in 20 countries due to unethical treatment to mothers and babies in the third world, the face cream I was using was made by a company that still tested cosmetics on animals (in awfully cruel experiments-please see www.BUAV.org) the apples we eat had been sprayed and treated with chemicals sometimes over 100 times before they got to the supermarket shelf and the list went on and on.
I was constantly complaining about the ethics and policies of manufacturers and companies to the point where I decided I will open my own shop that sources products as locally as possible, is caring, free from harmful additives, ethical, fairly traded and cruelty-free.
All the secrets that are kept from consumers is truly shocking. We need to be able to make informed decisions and support and back the companies that we choose to buy from, but we can't do that unless we have the information.
I wanted to find a shop where I could get all my weekly grocery and shopping needs with complete peace of mind that there were no potentially harmful additives, everything was 'cruelty free' I was considering the environment and where producers actually cared about our world and the people and the animals in it, but I couldn't find one, so I opened one - Who Cares Caring, Ethical and Fairtrade Supermarket.
